Can anyone comment on the implications of the electron-beam technology for flat-panel displays? Is this a potentially new way for Etec to leverage its technological edge? How difficult would it be to spread its focus beyond pattern generation equipment? Is the application of this technology to displays at all similar to its use in the chip manufacturing process? What kind of market is out there? And where is Etec getting the cash for these acquisitions? I do note that the latest 10Q, filed today, listed Etec as having dramatically more in cash and marketable securities than it did at the end of the October 1996 quarter ($56 million in cash versus $20 million in October).
