FAC: PON may not be a total enterprise LAN solution for most organizations, since it remains a contentious issue in the minds of many vs. point-to-point fiber to the x. Or, in this case specifically, fiber to the desk, or FTTD. Nonetheless, it is beginning to appear that PON technology will in some way be adopted by many enterprises in various ways, both in the traditional star-based format and those that are WDM-enabled. The reasons for this are many, but the one reason that stands out in the minds of most IT managers today is the irrefutable savings to be found through its use in the total cost of infrastructure ownership, or TCO. When viewing this white paper (URL above) in tandem with SAIC's, Verizon's and Motorola's recent releases, and the many independent cable operator SMB deployments that use various flavors of PON, it begins to appear that the sparks from the FTTD campfires may finally be getting closer to the trees. Note the virtual campus configurations discussed in this WP, not unlike what we've been talking about for quite some time. Thoughts welcome.
