From the Morgan Stanley report on NVDA under the section "Investment Positives":
Strong Technical Advisory Board To Future-Proof Technology And Roadmap.
NVIDIA's advisory board consists of leaders that provide the company with the vision of the future in PC graphics architecture (Pat Hanrahan, Stanford University), production of animation (Ed Catmull, Pixar Animation) and future video games (John Carmack, id Software). Each person has a slightly different perspective; however, their vision is typically very provocative and they have added value in critiquing NVIDIA's products and technology roadmaps to ensure that NVIDIA continues to maintain its leadership in the PC graphics market.
Upon a re-read, Carmack is not referred to as a director but as a member of "advisory board". I am a director in a private company and I can tell you that ignoring legal and executive authority, there is little difference between an advisory board member and a board of director's member. The directors discuss and decide what is the best direction for the company, and the advisors discuss what is the best direction for the company's future. They just don't have the final say.
Sorry for the confusion, but I think the issues still stand the same. Also needless to say that one does not advise the company for free.
