Remember the Nifty Fifty?
The bull market of the early 1970s was propelled largely by a basket of stocks that came to be known as "the Nifty Fifty." So the Nifty Five is a tipping of the hat--perhaps with a wink--to that historical phrase. Although the Nifty 50 got credit for that market run-up, they didn't all ride up the charts forever. Burroughs, Schlitz, and Simplicity Patterns are examples of stocks no longer considered so nifty. Today's market skeptics need only drop those names to strike fear in Nifty Five proponents.
